Harold turned professional in 2012 after failing to cut the Chiquita Classic. Varner joined the Web.com Tour in 2014, making 13 cuts in 21 tournaments and finishing in the top ten twice.

Varner won his first professional golf title in December 2016 when he won the Australian PGA Championship.
He also became the third black man to win on the European Tour, following South African Vincent Tshabalala and Tiger Woods. In February 2022, he won the PIF Saudi International.
Varner achieved his best PGA Tour finish to date in April 2021. At the RBC Heritage, he finished tied for second, four shots behind Stewart Cink.
