Faf de Klerk was part of the South Africa team that won the 2019 Rugby World Cup. He has played rugby at Hoërskool Waterkloof in Pretoria. Faf de Klerk made his debut in a 21–20 victory over the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein as part of the Lions squad.

Faf de Klerk departed the Sale Sharks club at the end of the 2021-22 season. He was selected by the then-appointed Springbok coach Allister Coetzee in South Africa’s 31-man squad for their 2016 three-test match series against Ireland.
