She was the seventh child in a family of eight. Anna Mani’s father was a wealthy civil engineer who owned extensive cardamom estates in the area.

Anna Man studied the optical properties of ruby and diamond under Prof. C V Raman after graduating from physics and chemistry.
She graduated from Imperial College London with a degree in meteorological instruments. In 1948, she returned to India and joined the Meteorological Department in Pune.
Anna Mani worked at the IMD to help the country design and manufacture its weather instruments.
She excelled so much in this male-dominated field that she was promoted to division head in 1953. More than 100 weather instrument designs were simplified and standardised for production under her leadership.
