Hitchens described himself as a democratic socialist, and he was a member of various socialist organisations throughout his life, including the International Socialists. He eventually stopped describing himself as a socialist but he continued to identify as a Marxist.

Christopher Hitchens died of pneumonia on December 15, 2011, at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer, Houston, aged 62. Before his death, he announced that he was undergoing treatment for oesophageal cancer.
