What is René Goscinny famous for?

René Goscinny was a French comic book editor and writer.  Goscinny was born in Paris in 1926 to Polish Jewish immigrants.

He was raised primarily in Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he attended French schools, but he also spent time in the United States.

René Goscinny is probably Europe’s best-known writer of humorous comics. He made his mark as co-creator of ‘Astérix’ (1959- ), the world’s bestselling European comic series, second only to Hergé’s ‘Tintin’.

The adventures of the invincible Gaul are popular with both children and adults.  ‘Astérix’ is one of the few comics admired by intellectuals.

Goscinny’s name is also associated with another international bestseller, Morris ‘Lucky Luke,’ which he reworked into a hilarious parody of the western genre.

Goscinny’s most lasting legacy, however, maybe that he was able to pique the interest of children in more sophisticated comedy while demonstrating to adults that comics could be enjoyed on a higher level as well.

Most remarkably, it earned him a massive global and devoted following, propelling him to the top of the list of best-selling French-language authors on the planet.
