On Friday, August 5 2022, Heche was in a high-speed car that ran off the road and collided with a house that caught fire, according to Los Angeles Police Public Information Officer Jeff Lee.

Fifty-nine firefighters fought the blaze that had engulfed both Heche’s car and the house for 65 minutes until she could be safely extracted from the wreckage.

Heche was reportedly able to communicate at the time of her rescue, but she quickly lost consciousness and never regained it. She has been in a coma since then.

On Monday, August 8, Heche’s condition was described as “extremely critical.” According to a statement released by Heche’s family, she suffered an anoxic brain injury.

“Unfortunately, as a result of her accident, Anne suffered a severe anoxic brain injury and remains in a coma in critical condition,” a representative for Heche’s family said in a statement obtained by People. “She is unlikely to survive.”

According to Heche’s rep, the actress was kept on life support to “determine if her organs are viable.”
