Grylls asked Kutcher in the episode where he gets his strength. “Two years ago, I had this weird, super rare form of vasculitis that, like, knocked out my vision, knocked out my hearing, knocked out, like, all my equilibrium,” Kutcher said.

Kutcher told Grylls that regaining those abilities took him about a year. “You don’t appreciate it until it’s gone,” he says, “until you say, ‘I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to see, hear or walk again.”

Kutcher added that he was “Lucky to be alive.” Vasculitis is a family of rare diseases that involve inflammation of the blood vessels. This may be triggered by an infection or medicine, although often the cause is unknown.
