On April 7 2022, Archie Battersbee was discovered unconscious by his mother, Hollie Dance, at her home in Southend, Essex.

He had a ligature around his neck, leading her to believe he was participating in an online challenge gone wrong.
Archie was taken to the hospital but he never regained consciousness after his mother discovered him at home in early April 2022.

His parents fought a legal battle to keep Archie on life support after a specialist told the judge that Archie’s brain stem was severely damaged and that there had been signs of deterioration since the previous scans in mid-April.

Archie’s life support was withdrawn earlier on Saturday, August 6 2022. He died at 12.15 BST.

The blackout challenge causes a lack of oxygen to the brain, which is potentially fatal.
Although it is unknown whether Archie attempted the challenge, his mother believes he did after discovering him with a piece of knotted or tied fabric around his head.
