Andrew Quilty was born on December 29, 1981, in Sydney, Australia. Andrew is a well-known Australian photojournalist who is living in Afghanistan as of now. He is the cousin of acclaimed Australian artist Ben Quilty, a painter based in Perth.

Following a road trip across Australia in 2001 with a Nikon F3 from his photographer uncle, Andrew Quilty started a photography course at the Sydney Institute of TAFE, from which he graduated in 2004. He earlier left school after completing Year 10 in 1999 and moved towards photography in the year 2000 after his application to a university photo elective was rejected.

Andrew Quilty was awarded the Gold Walkley in 2016 in recognition of “The Man on the Operating Table”, a photograph of hospital patient Baynazar Mohammed Nazar lying dead on an operating table in the Médecins Sans Frontières Kunduz Trauma Centre.
