Andrew Quilty undertook an informal internship at Fairfax Media, where he later got full-time employment as a photojournalist at Fairfax Media. He later became a freelance photographer in Sydney. However, he moved to New York and joined the Australian collective Oculi in 2007.
A recipient of several awards and honours, Andrew Quilty was awarded the Gold Walkley in 2016 in recognition of “The Man on the Operating Table” photograph of the dead patient Baynazar Mohammed Nazar.
