The government of Lesotho has dropped the murder charges against its former Prime Minister Thomas Thabane, following the death of his ex-wife, Lipolelo, in 2017.

The court at Maseru stated that the reason for the action was their inability to trace relevant witnesses to the case.
We have been unable to trace an important witness in this matter and the Director of Public Prosecutions has decided to withdraw the charges against the accused,” prosecutor Gareth Lappan had explained to the court.
The trial saw five co-defendants including Maesaiah, who was controversially granted bail in June 2020, and the four arrested killers of Lipolelo.

Thabane had been accused of sending assassins and paying them the sum of $24,000 to kill Lipolelo. He however denied the allegations.
The killing had taken place just two days before he was inaugurated as Prime Minister.
The incident led to a political crisis.
Thabane had resigned as prime minister in May 2020, following heightened pressures for him to resign.
The estranged couple had been through a very horrific divorce proceeding.
Two months after the death of Lipolelo, Thabane married his current wife Maesaiah.
