Houston Texans rookie wide receiver John Metchie III announced on Sunday, July 24 2022, that he has been diagnosed with a form of leukaemia and will most likely miss the rest of the season.

Metchie said in a statement released by the Texans, “Recently, I was diagnosed with APL Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia, the most curable form of Leukemia.”
“I am currently receiving excellent medical care, am in good spirits, and expect to recover at some point in the future.
As a result of this diagnosis, I will most likely be unable to play football this season. My main priority will be my health and recovery.

Metchie was selected 44th overall in the 2022 draught after the Texans traded up in the second round, sending three picks to the Cleveland Browns.
Metchie had 96 catches for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns for Alabama last season before tearing his ACL in the SEC championship game. He had stated that he expected to be ready for a training camp before this diagnosis.
