Sydney McLaughlin Breaks Her Own 400m Hurdles Record Again at the World Athletics Championships

Sydney McLaughlin broke her own 400m hurdles world record to win gold at the World Athletics Championships on July 22, 2022, at Hayward Field.

She ran in 50.68 seconds, breaking her previous record of 51.41 seconds set at the US Championships in June 2022.

The Olympic champion has broken the 400-meter hurdles world record four times this year. McLaughlin became the first woman to finish the 400m hurdle event in under 51 seconds.

McLaughlin surged ahead of her competitors to take an early lead, defeating Dutch runner Femke Bol and former world champion Dalilah Muhammad, who finished in 52.27 and 53.13 seconds, respectively.

She has lowered the world record from 52.16 to 50.68 since June 2021. She is nine-tenths of a second faster than the second-fastest woman in history, countrywoman Dalilah Muhammad, who took bronze behind Dutchwoman Femke Bol in Eugene, Oregon, on Friday.

McLaughlin became the second-youngest track and field athlete in history to hold the three most prestigious individual accolades — Olympic gold, world title, and world record.

McLaughlin then set another world record and won gold in Tokyo 2020 with a time of 51.46 seconds.
