According to the US Capitol Police, seventeen members of Congress were arrested on Tuesday, July 19 during an abortion rights demonstration outside the Supreme Court.

The United States Capitol Police said they arrested 35 people for crowding, obstructing, or incommoding, including 17 members of Congress.
Protesters had set up shop on First Street NE near the Capitol building, blocking traffic. Before beginning the arrests, Capitol Police said they issued their standard three warnings.

A spokesperson for Democratic Rep. Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts confirmed multiple arrests of members of Congress, including Pressley.
Ricardo Sánchez, Pressley’s communications director, described her arrest as “nonviolent civil disobedience.” Rep. Katherine Clark, the Democratic House Assistant Speaker, was also detained.
The office of Rep. Carolyn Maloney also announced that she was among the Democratic Women’s Caucus members arrested near the Supreme Court.
Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-spokesperson Cortez’s confirmed that she was among those arrested.
