His was born to a Swiss-American father, Peter Johannes Hauri, who worked as an insomnia psychologist, and his mother, Cynthia Cleveland Hauri.
His father died in 2013.
Gravy had attended Mayo High School, and the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Wisconsin.
He had graduated with a degree in marketing.
As a college student, Gravy would sing and rap for the fun of it and would later proceed to SoundCloud to drop some hits.
He says his role models are rappers Lil Yachty and Lil Peep.
