How often are the world track and field championships?

The World track and field championships are an athletics competition held every two years and organised by World Athletics.

In 1983, Helsinki hosted the first World Athletics Championships. These championships were first held every four years until 1991 when they were moved to a two-year cycle.

It is the world’s third-largest sporting event, with approximately 2000 athletes from more than 200 countries competing for 49 gold medals.

The size of the competition has grown over time. An estimated 1,300 athletes from 154 countries competed in 1983.

It had grown to 1,907 athletes from 203 countries by the 2003 competition in Paris, with coverage reaching 179 countries.

There has also been a change in composition over the years, with the addition of several new events, all for women.

By 2005, the only distinctions were men’s competition in the 50-kilometre walk and equivalent events in women’s 100-meter hurdles and heptathlon to men’s 110-meter hurdles and decathlon.

The 2022 World Athletics Championships are currently being held from July 15 to 24, 2022, at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, USA.
