John Kofi Agyekum Kufour is a Ghanaian lawyer and a former president of the Republic of Ghana.

John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor
John Agyekum Kufour was born on 8th December 1938. Kufour served as the President of Ghana from 7th January 2001 to 7th January 2009 under the New Patriotic Party(NPP), during the same period, Kufour was also elected the Chairperson of the African Union from 2007 to 2008. Kufour started schooling at the Kumasi Government School located in Asem built by Sir Gordon Guggisberg. He then went to the Osei Tutu Boarding School(now Osei Tutu Senior High School). He also attended his Form 1 to Form 5 at the Prempeh College from 1954 to 1958.

John Kufour Elections
John Agyekum Kufour was nominated on 20th April 1996 by 1034 out of 2000 delegates of the New Patriotic Party(NPP) to run for President of Ghana. He lost to Jerry John Rawlings in the 1996 elections.
He was however re-nominated by the NPP to run again for President and assume the position of the Leader of the New Patriotic Party. Kufour won the presidential election in December 2000. His victory marked the first time in Ghana’s history that an incumbent government had a peaceful transition of power to the opposition.

John Agyekum Kufuor married his wife Theresa Kufuor at age 23 in the year 1962. The couple is blessed with five children. John Kufour and his family are Catholics. He is known to be a Senior Grand Warden of the United Grand Lodge of England Freemasons. He openly professed his membership as a Freemason since he was a young lawyer. He is an Asante from the Ashanti Region in Ghana. He is fluent in Twi, Ga, and English. He currently resides in Accra with his family.
