Hydraulic tools were used to free him and his passenger, Demaris Meyer, from the vehicle.  Morgan Freeman was flown to The Regional Medical Center in Memphis by helicopter.

The accident broke his left shoulder, arm, and elbow, and he underwent surgery on August 5. For four hours, doctors operated on him to repair nerve damage in his shoulder and arm.

Even though alcohol was not a factor in the crash, Meyer sued Freeman for negligence, claiming that he had been drinking, but the suit was eventually settled for an undisclosed sum.

Freeman has had fibromyalgia since the incident. Fibromyalgia is a medical condition characterised by chronic widespread pain, fatigue, waking up tired, cognitive symptoms, lower abdominal pain or cramps, and depression.
