Narcos is based on a true story, but the Netflix series has been fictionalised; however, it is very close to Pablo Escobar’s life.
Seasons 1 and 2 are set and filmed in Colombia and tell the story of drug lord Pablo Escobar, who became a billionaire through the production and distribution of cocaine.
The series depicts Escobar’s early involvement in the Colombian cocaine trade. He was an established black marketeer in Medelln, moving trucks of illegal goods into Colombia during a time when this was strictly forbidden.

The series also focuses on Escobar’s interactions with drug lords, DEA agents, and various opposition entities.
Season 3 picks up after Escobar’s death and follows the DEA as they attempt to halt the rise of the infamous Cali Cartel.
Season 4 was reset as the first season of Narcos: Mexico, a new Netflix original series. The new series, which premiered on November 16, 2018, is set in 1980s Mexico.
