Denis McDonough is an American government official who has served as the 11th Secretary of Veterans Affairs under President Joe Biden since 2021.

Denis McDonough is not a veteran. He is the second non-veteran serving in that position. He was sworn in by Vice President Kamala Harris on February 9, 2021.
McDonough earned an MSFS from Georgetown University’s Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service in 1996.
McDonough worked as an aide for the United States House Committee on Foreign Affairs from 1996 to 1999, focusing on Latin America.

He then became Senator Tom Daschle’s senior foreign policy advisor. McDonough became legislative director for newly elected Senator Ken Salazar after Daschle’s reelection defeat in 2004.
Mark Lippert, Senator Barack Obama’s chief foreign policy advisor and a Navy reservist, was called up to active duty in 2007. Lippert enlisted McDonough to fill in for him during his deployment to Iraq.
During Obama’s presidential campaign in 2008, McDonough remained a senior foreign policy advisor to him.
