Charlize Theron was born on August 7, 1975, in Benoni, Transvaal Province, South Africa to co-owners of a road construction company, Charles and Gerda. Following her artistic interests, Theron began ballet lessons at age six and her encouraging parents sent her to a Johannesburg boarding school to study dance by age 12.
During a visit home from a boarding school when she was 15, her drunk father was shot by her mother in self-defence after being attacked by him.

Theron later moved to Milan to work as a model when she was 16 before settling in New York City two years later. There she continued to model and began studying at the Joffrey Ballet School.

However, Theron’s dreams of becoming a prima ballerina were cut short after getting some knee injuries making her resort to pursuing acting jobs.

In 1994, Theron made a loud scene arguing with a bank teller who refused to allow her to pull funds from a South African account. There, she was discovered by an agent John Crosby who offered to sign him.
Theron made her acting debut in a small role in Children of the Corn III (1995) but her big break came in 1997 when she played Keanu Reeves’ wife in The Devil’s Advocate. The following years were successful for the actress putting her on the most sought after entertainers list.
