A gunman in Highland Park, Illinois, suspected to be Robert E. Crimo III killed seven people and injured dozens more on a July Fourth parade route on Monday.

According to Lake County Coroner Jennifer Banek on Tuesday July 5, 2022, all the deceased victims were adults and five of them died at the scene.

Jennifer Banek, Lake County Coroner, read the list of names during the news conference. The victims are as follows:
  • 64-year-old Katherine Goldstein of Highland Park
  • 35-year-old Irina McCarthy of Highland Park
  • 37-year-old Kevin McCarthy of Highland Park
  • 63-year-old Jacquelyn Sundheim of Highland Park
  • 88-year-old Stephen Straus of Highland Park
  • 78-year-old Nicolas Toledo-Zaragoza of Morelos, Mexico
A seventh victim died at a hospital outside of Lake County, Banek said.
A total of 45 people died or were injured during the shooting, said Christopher Covelli, spokesperson for the Lake County Major Crime Task Force.

The suspect, 21-year-old Robert E. Crimo III, was taken into custody after a tip from “an alert member of the community” helped police track him down in his mother’s vehicle and detained him during a traffic stop.

Weapon used in Highland Park Shooting

What weapon was used in the Highland Park Shooting? According to officials, a High-Powered Rifle similar to an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, which was purchased legally, was used in 4th of July Highland Park Shooting.

Lake County Major Crime Task Force spokesman Chris Covelli said more than 70 rounds were fired at spectators shortly after the parade began at 10 a.m. Monday from a “high-powered rifle” that was similar to an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.

Covelli further revealed that police recovered a gun at the parade that was registered to Robert Crimo III.

Again, a second high-powered rifle was found in the car with Crimo when he was apprehended nearly eight hours after the massacre, Covelli said.

In all, Crimo bought five weapons, including a shotgun and a pistol, legally over the course of the past year, Covelli said.
