Who was Jayland Walker?

Jayland Walker was a 25-year-old black man who was killed on June 27, 2022, following a vehicular pursuit.

Officers from the Akron Police Department fired approximately ninety rounds at him during a foot chase and attempted arrest.

According to the Akron Police Department, on Monday, June 27, 2022, at approximately 12:30 a.m., police in Akron, Ohio, attempted to stop Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old man, for an unspecified traffic violation.

Walker refused to stop, and a chase ensued. Walker’s car eventually slowed down, and while it was still moving, he exited from the passenger side, wearing a ski mask, and ran towards a nearby parking lot.

Officers pursued Walker and used a stun gun to try to stop him, but they were unsuccessful. After chasing Walker for about ten seconds, eight police officers opened fire for six or seven seconds, firing approximately 90 rounds.

Police handcuffed Walker after the shooting, and he was discovered with his hands cuffed behind his back when EMTs arrived on the scene.

Walker was declared dead on the scene. Walker’s body had 60 gunshot wounds. His death was ruled a homicide by the Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office.
