The Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) has ranked him as high as world No. 54 in singles, which he achieved in June 2022. That same month, he achieved a career-high doubles ranking of No. 396.

After reaching his first two ATP Tour finals, Nakashima broke into the top 100 in August 2021.

His breakthrough success qualified him for the 2021 Next Generation ATP Finals, the year-end tournament for the top-ranked singles players aged 21 and under, where he reached the semifinals and finished the season at a career-high ranking of No. 62.

Nakashima reached the third round of a Grand Slam for the first time in 2022, losing to third seed Alexander Zverev.

For the first time in his career, he reached the fourth round of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships, defeating Daniel Elahi Galán.
