Richard began playing tennis just at the age of 4. Gasquet made his junior debut in April 1999, at the age of 12, in a French grade 3 tournament.
He had a 44-7 career singles record and a 10-4 career doubles record as a junior. On September 9, 2002, he achieved a career-high juniors singles ranking of world No. 1.
