Malik Ahmad Monk was born to Michael Scales and Jackie Monk in Jonesboro, Arkansas in 1998. During his freshman year at East Poinsett County High School in Lepanto, Arkansas, he averaged 22.8 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game.

Monk later transferred to Bentonville High School, where he averaged 26.6 points as a junior. But it was his senior year when he averaged 28.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 4.4 assists per game, that drew the most attention.

Monk was named Arkansas Mr Basketball, a McDonald’s All-American, and a Jordan Brand Classic All-Star as a result of his efforts. He was also ranked the No. 9 recruit in the country before enrolling at the University of Kentucky.

Monk scored at least 20 points in six of the Wildcats’ first nine games, helping them to a 9-1 start. The 11th game against North Carolina has simply been dubbed the Malik Monk game.
