The process requires a vote from two-third of the majority before it can be executed.

However, in 1975, the number of votes required was reduced to three-fifths of all sworn senators or at least 60 of the 100-member Senate.

How Long Is The Longest Filibuster?

The longest filibuster lasted 24 hours and 18 minutes.

The filibuster had begun at 8:54 p.m. and ended at 9:12 p.m. the next day.

As of 2022, it remains the longest single-person filibuster in the history of the United States Senate.

In 1957, Strom Thurmond, a United States senator from South Carolina, started a filibuster to stop a bill intended to promote the Civil Rights Act of 1957.

Strom had only been Senator for three years but reinforced Southern ideas about racism.
