Liliane Barbe and Guido Mertens are the parents of tennis star Elise Mertens. Liliane is a teacher and Guido makes furniture for churches.

Elise is their second daughter. Their first daughter Lauren who is currently an airline pilot introduced Elise to tennis when she was just 4 years old.
While growing up, Mertens looked up to Justine Henin and Kim Clijsters and is currently a member of the Kim Clijsters Academy, where she has been training since 2015.

Elise Mertens is the current world number one in doubles. She became world No. 1 in women’s doubles for the first time on May 10, 2021.
Mertens has had a lot of success in doubles, including winning the Indian Wells and Miami doubles titles in 2019 to complete the Sunshine Double, but she has also had a lot of success in singles.
She has reached the Australian Open semifinals in 2018 and the US Open quarterfinals in 2019 and 2020.
