Athanasios “Thanasi” Kokkinakis was born on April 10, 1996, in Adelaide, Australia to his parents Voula Kokkinakis and Trevor Kokkinakis. His parents are both Greek immigrants. Trevor (Tryfon) hails from Kalamata, Greece while his mother Voula (Paraskevi) comes from Tripoli, Greece.

Thanasi Kokkinakis also holds Greek citizenship. He was raised alongside siblings including Pan Kokkinakis and Christina Kokkinakis. He attended Scotch College in Adelaide. As a junior, Kokkinakis was ranked as high as No. 10 in the world and won one junior Grand Slam title. He won the doubles title at the 2013 Wimbledon Championships partnering Nick Kyrgios.
