Murray was born in Glasgow, Scotland, on 15 May 1987 to parents Judy Murray (born Judy Erskine) and William Murray.

Who is Judy Murray?

Andy’s mother Judy is a Scottish tennis coach and she began coaching Andy on how to play tennis when he was just three years old.

Judy won 64 titles in Scotland during her junior and senior career, and decided to have a go at the professional tour in around 1976.

Judy began coaching and was the initial coach for both her sons before handing over the reins as their professional careers bloomed.

Aside from her own sons, Judy has coached many players at regional and national level under the auspices of the British tennis governing body, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA).

Judy was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2017 Birthday Honours for services to tennis, women in sport, and charity.

Judy is also a trustee of the Judy Murray Foundation, a registered charity under Scottish law, with the object of improving access to tennis opportunities across Scotland.

Judy has also appeared in some reality TV shows, appearing as a contestant on The Chase Celebrity Christmas Special in 2018 and as a contestant on Celebrity Masterchef in 2020.

Judy was also given the 2021 Georgina Clark Mother Award from the Women’s Tennis Association.

Who is William Murray?

William Murray hails from Dunblane and is the regional manager of Scottish newsagent chain RS McColl.

William and Judy Erskine got married in 1980 and the couple have two children; Jamie in 1986 and Andy a year later in 1987.

However, the pair divorced in 2005 after being separated for nine years.

William revealed in an interview with Daily Record that his sons Andy and Jamie took the news of the divorce very hard.

William said;

“It ripped me apart to have to hurt them by telling them what I did. They were distraught.

“They are very different personalities but they took the news much the same way.
