On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court announced a 7-2 judgement in favour of “Jane Roe” (Norma McCorvey), stating that women in the United States have a basic right to choose whether or not to have abortions without excessive government restrictions, and ruling Texas’ abortion law unconstitutional.

According to the judgement, a woman’s right to privacy extended to the fetus/unborn child she was carrying.  The court determined that abortion during the first trimester was no riskier than carrying the fetus/child to term.
