On January 22, 1973, the Supreme Court issued a 7-2 judgement in favour of “Jane Roe,” stating that women in the United States have a basic right to choose whether or not to have abortions without excessive government restrictions and declaring Texas’ abortion law unconstitutional.

The Roe v. Wade decision by the United States Supreme Court was one of the most controversial in the country’s history. For decades, anti-abortion politicians and campaigners attempted to overturn the ruling.

Since 1973, there have been repeated challenges that have restricted the scope of Roe v. Wade but have not overturned it.

The Supreme Court ruled in Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey (1992) that abortion restrictions are illegal if they impose an “undue barrier” on a woman seeking an abortion before the foetus is viable.

The Supreme Court affirmed the federal Partial-Birth Abortion Ban Act (2003) in Gonzales v. Carhart (2007), which barred a seldom-used abortion method known as intact dilation and evacuation.
