Hugh Edward McElhenny Jr. was a professional American football player.

He was a halfback in the National Football League from 1952 to 1964 for the San Francisco 49ers, Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, and Detroit Lions.

McElhenny was a five-time first-team All-Pro selection and was named to the NFL’s 1950s All-Decade Team. He was a first-team All-American in 1951 with the Huskies, and his No. 39 is retired by the 49ers.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1970, and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981.

After retiring as a player, McElhenny served as a color commentator on 49ers radio broadcasts from 1966 to 1972.

McElhenny died in his Henderson, Nevada home on June 17, 2022, at age 93.

Peggy McElhenny and Hugh McElhenny were high school sweethearts.

The duo married on March 19, 1949, and were together until she died in 2019.

Peggy McElhenny and Hugh had two daughters; Karen McElhenny and Susan Hemenway.

Peggy McElhenny passed away peacefully on April 20, 2019, at age 89, in Henderson, Nevada.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers, Morgan and Alexander.

Peggy McElhenny is survived by daughters Karen McElhenny (Christopher), and Susan Hemenway (Russell); grandchildren Sean Simmons (Jennifer), Jennifer Hemenway, Kyle Hemenway, Keith Hemenway (Loreal); great-granddaughters Ally and Josie Simmons and great-grandson Hudson Hemenway.
