Prosopagnosia: Does Brad Pitt suffer from facial blindness?

In 2013, celebrated actor Brad Pitt opened up about a challenge he has been facing for a long period of his life.

In an interview with Esquire, Pitt revealed that he always has a hard time remembering the faces of those he meets.

He further went on to say that he thinks he might suffer from prosopagnosia, or face blindness, though he has not been tested or diagnosed with the disorder.

Pitt said;

“So many people hate me because they think I’m disrespecting them.”

“I took one year where I just said, This year, I’m just going to cop to it and say to people, ‘OK, where did we meet?’ But it just got worse. People were more offended. …

“You get this thing, like, ‘You’re being egotistical. You’re being conceited.’

“But it’s a mystery to me, man. I can’t grasp a face, and yet I come from such a design/aesthetic point of view. I am going to get it tested.”

Prosopagnosia, commonly called face blindness, is simply a condition where one is unable  to accurately remember faces.

The difficulty with accurate facial recognition can manifest in a number of ways including; poor recognition of familiar individuals in person or in photographs and an inability to describe faces.

Prosopagnosia affects some celebrities and the list of famous people who have been officially diagnosed with prosopagnosia include;

  1. Anthropologist Jane Goodall,
  2. British actor Stephen Fry,
  3. Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and
  4. Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden.
