Bruton Smith was inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2007.

Bruton Smith died on June 22, 2022, at the age of 95.

Bonita Harris was the wife of Bruton Smith.
Bonita Harris and Bruton Smith met at the Rockford, Illinois dealership in 1969 when he sold her a new Thunderbird. She was 21 and he was 42.
The pair married on June 6, 1972, in Las Vegas.
Bonita and Bruton had four children, one of whom succumbed to crib death at the age of 6 months. Bonita also has a son, Scott, from a previous marriage.
Bonita and Bruton separated on June 24, 1988, and divorced on February 5, 1990. The divorce was followed by acrimonious litigation that ultimately culminated in a 1994 settlement of more than $19 million, the largest amount in North Carolina history.
