California has sent legislative delegations to the United States Senate and House of Representatives since it became a state in 1850. Each state elects two senators for six years and two members of the House for two years.

As the most populous state in the United States, California has the most representation in the United States House of Representatives, with 53 Representatives. Each Representative is in charge of one congressional district.

California’s current congressional delegation in the 117th Congress consists of two Democratic senators. The 53  representatives are made up of 42 Democrats and 11 Republicans.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi of California’s 12th congressional district is the current dean of the California delegation, having served in the House since 1987.

Kevin McCarthy, the House Minority Leader, is also a member of California’s congressional delegation, representing the state’s 23rd congressional district.
