Popovici started swimming, at Lia Manoliu pool in Bucharest at the age of 4, the same way all active children do: taken by his parents who were hoping to pick him up all tired out so he would sleep more, but also at a doctor’s recommendation to correct early stage scoliosis.
The water was the environment in which his long and lithe body felt right at home from the start and which gave him confidence.
Popovici also enjoyed the fact that at Bucharest Sport Club, the private club where he took his first lessons, swimming was play.
