Gustavo Francisco Petro Urrego is a Colombian economist, politician, and former guerrilla warrior who is also the country’s president-elect. On June 19, he defeated Rodolfo Hernández Suárez in the second round of Colombia’s 2022 presidential election.

Petro is the first candidate for President of Colombia to identify himself as a leftist.
He created the Humane Colombia movement to contest for the mayoralty of Bogotá after issues and ideological differences with the leaders of the PDA.
He was elected Mayor of Bogotá in local elections on October 30, 2011, and took office on January 1, 2012.

On 27 May, he finished second in the first round of the 2018 Colombian presidential election, with over 25% of the vote, and lost in the run-off election on 17 June.
Petro was born in 1960 in Ciénaga de Oro, Córdoba’s department. His father and mother were both farmers. Petro was raised in the Catholic faith and has declared that liberation theology has given him a perspective of God, while he has also questioned his existence.
