On February 11, 2006, then-Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney shot Harry Whittington, a 78-year-old Texas attorney, using a 28-gauge Perazzi shotgun (S/N: 115288) while partaking in a quail hunt on a ranch in Riviera, Texas.

Whittington was injured in the face, neck, and upper torso. Whittington was moved from intensive care to a “step-down unit” at Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital and was said to be in stable health.
Rather than try to remove the 30 birdshot pellets embedded in his body, doctors decided to leave them there. Each pellet has a diameter of less than 2.5 mm (0.098 in).
