Francis is forever linked to the US Open at The Country Club at Brookline for the Greatest Game Ever Played.

Francis, who was born in Brookline, MA in 1893, was raised in Brookline, very close to the 17th hole of the country club property as far back as the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Francis grew interest in the game from an early age and started caddying at The Country Club at age 11.

He faced the temptation to give up on the game but he wouldn’t. He rather went ahead to pursue an amateur career and at age 20, he had won the Massachusetts Amateur.

From there, he got invitations to play at the U.S Open hosted by the club and few years down the line, Francis clinched the 1913 U.S Open title.

Francis was named one of the most successful golfers in the history of America, with two Amateur wins, 27 overall wins and participations in 12 Walker Cups, 6 U.S Opens, 1 Open Championship and 1 Masters Tournament.

He became the first non-British Captain of the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
