Mark Shields is an American political columnist and commenter. People mostly know him as the weekly political analyst and commentary for the PBS Newshour. Additionally, Mark Shields has covered the last 12 presidential campaigns.

Shields was born in Weymouth, Massachusetts on May 25, 1937. He was raised in an Irish Catholic family. He attended the University of Notre Dame and graduated in 1959.

Shields died of kidney failure at his home in Chevy Chase, Md. Before he retired in 2020, Shields provided thoughtful insights into the administration of six US presidents, on the Persian Gulf War, the Iran Contra affair and 9/11. He was 85 years old.

Shields was known for both his sense of humour and his expensive knowledge of American politics. Judy Woodruff, the anchor and managing editor of Newshour said in a tweet announcing his death.
