Denis Shapovalov was born on April 15, 1999, to Tessa Shapovalova and Viktor Shapovalov.

His mother, Tessa, is a Jew from Ukraine. She has always been a tennis player and coach. She had coached Denis from a very young age.

Denis’ father, Viktor, is from Russia. Both parents are orthodox Christians.

The entire family had moved to Canada before Denis’ clocked one.

Denis Shapovalov Coaches

Aside from his mother, Tessa Shapovalova, Denis has been coached by Martin Laurendeau, who helped him improve upon his one-handed backhand motion, which he had developed since age 6.

Other coaches who have helped train Denis include Rob Steckley, Adriano Fuorivia, former world number 8, Mikhail Youzhny and Jamie Delgado, who coached Andy Murray for 5 years.

Denis Shapovalov Career

In 2016, Denis Shapovalov clinched the singles title at the Wimbledon Championships.

Also in 2021, he took home the ATP Tour singles title and qualified for semi-finals at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.

As a junior, Denis reached a career high of world number 2 in singles, clinching two junior Grand Slam titles.

Denis plays a single-handed backhand with his left hand.

He is known to be bold, making high-risk shot in court.
