Gwen Casten, the 17-year-old daughter of Illinois Rep. Sean Casten, died Monday, June 13 2022, according to a brief message posted on Twitter by his office on Monday night.

“The Casten family wants privacy, and we will make no more remarks during this difficult time,” the statement added. The cause of Gwen’s death was not disclosed by Casten’s office.

Gwen had recently starred in a political video in support of her father’s third term in Congress.

In the video, which was posted earlier this month, she described turning 18 as a “huge year” full of “plenty of achievements,” including “voting for the first time.” But not for everyone.”
Gwen also supported her father’s attempts to pass new gun restrictions and defend abortion rights in the video.
Gwen also served as a co-director of the March For Our Lives Illinois chapter, a youth-led movement aimed at tackling gun violence.
Casten serves Illinois’ 6th Congressional District as a Democrat. He was first elected in 2018 as the district’s first Democrat in nearly 50 years.
