It happened that Philip’s friend, David Bar Katz, found him lying dead in his house in Manhattan.
Investigations uncovered substances of heroin and prescription medication in Philip’s apartment with a syringe in his arm.
Philip was a drug addict from his youth. Even when he got out of rehab, he found it difficult to abstain from drugs beyond two years.
Philip’s funeral was held at St. Ignatius Loyola Church in Manhattan with a host of celebrities in attendance.
Philip’s estate was worth $35 million as at the time of his death.

Philip grew up in Fairport, New York, and studied acting at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts.
He first appeared on screen in 1991 in an episode of Law & Order.
He gained prominence in subsequent years after starring in Scent of a Woman (1992), Twister (1996), Boogie Nights (1997), Happiness (1998), Patch Adams (1998), The Big Lebowski (1998), Magnolia (1999), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), Almost Famous (2000), Punch-Drunk Love (2002), and Along Came Polly (2004).
His roles had earned him several awards and accolades, including an Oscar.
