Matt began playing while at Elkins High School, and won the all-state tournament twice.
In 2002, he led his team to a 35–1 record and the USA Today National Prep Championship.

The same year, he was named the District Sophomore of the Year that year, and till date, he has the most career hits in the history of his Alma mater.
In 2004, he was named a 2004 TPX second-team High School All-American.
Matt continued to play after gaining admission into Texas Christian University (TCU), where he studied communications.
As a freshman, Matt played 50 games and batted .289, 27 runs batted in (RBI), eight doubles (2B) and one home run (HR) with 11 multi-hit games and eight multiple-RBI games.
