His managerial career was as illustrious as his playing one. Bingham returned to the English club game when he replaced Harry Catterick as manager of Everton in May 1973.
Bingham led the team to seventh place in the First Division in 1973–74, two points shy of a UEFA Cup berth.
Everton finished twelfth in 1975–76, as the club entered a period of decline at Goodison Park. Bingham was fired in January 1977 after a run of eight league games without a win; the club finished 1976–77 in ninth place under new management.
