Robert Alexander a former American football running back and one of West Virginia’s greatest high school football players in its long history, died Tuesday, June 7 2022 evening, according to St. Albans Mayor Scott James.

Alexander was discovered unresponsive in his St. Albans home on Tuesday, according to the mayor. He was 64. The cause of Alexander’s death, according to Mayor James, was unknown. His remains were taken to the medical examiner’s office

Alexander, often known as “Alexander the Great” during his remarkable career, became one of the most sought-after recruits in Mountain State football history while playing for the South Charleston Black Eagles.

Alexander carried for nearly 6,000 yards and scored 93 touchdowns during his high school career at South Charleston from 1974 to 1976. He received the Kennedy Award as the state’s top high school player as a junior and senior.
