Song, who was born in 1927 in what is now the North Korean town of Jaeryong, was one of perhaps millions of North Korean refugees who fled to the South during the 1950-1953 Korean War.

He began his career in the entertainment industry as a vocalist in the late 1950s, but he broke through as a comic, becoming a staple on TV and radio shows as a lovable personality who peppered guests with wisecracks and jokes.
