Angelo Moriondo was an inventor from Italy. In 1884, he was awarded a patent for the first known espresso machine. To efficiently make coffee, his system used a combination of steam and boiling water.

Angelo Moriondo comes from a business family. His grandparents established a liquor manufacturing company, which was carried on by his father Giacomo, who eventually built the chocolate company Moriondo and Gariglio with his brother Agostino and cousin Gariglio.

Angelo bought the Grand Hotel Ligure in Piazza Carlo Felice and the American Bar in Via Roma’s Galleria Nazionale. Moriondo never put his device into mass production. He restricted himself to hand-building a few machines, which he fiercely kept in his enterprises.

How Did Angelo Moriondo Die?

Angelo Moriondo passed away on May 31, 1914, at the age of 62, in Marentino, Turin, Italy. His father did not confirm the reason for his death. Nothing is known regarding his death.
