George Herman “Babe” Ruth Jr. played in Major League Baseball (MLB) from 1914 to 1935. He began his MLB career as a standout left-handed pitcher with the Boston Red Sox but found his greatest popularity as a hitting outfielder for the New York Yankees. Throughout Ruth’s career, he received a great deal of press and public attention for his baseball accomplishments as well as his off-field habits of drinking and womanising.
Ruth made numerous public appearances in his later years, particularly in support of American efforts during World War II. He was diagnosed with nasopharyngeal carcinoma in 1946 and died two years later.
Ruth is still remembered in American society, and President Donald Trump awarded him the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 2018.
